It's hard to drive down Kings Highway in Lewes without seeing the bright orange building near the split with Freeman Highway. The 400-square-foot naval orange hut is the home of the Lewes Surf Shanty, a new business aimed at folks who need to pick up a few last-minute items before hitting the beach.
Offering a variety of beach items for sale and rent, the shop is hoping to fill a void in the Lewes area.
“It started as a rental idea,” said Leslie Bond, one of three owners. “There doesn't seem to be anything that covers Lewes. Rehoboth is pretty well covered.”
The Surf Shanty offers everything a beachgoer may need, from beach chairs and umbrellas to wagons and bogey boards. If someone is looking for an easy way to get to the beach, motorized scooters are also available for rent.
“The idea was that if someone were driving by and had forgotten their towel or sunscreen they could easily pick one up here without going to the major outlets,” Bond said.
If all goes to plan, the Lewes Surf Shanty will also soon offer drop-off, pick-up service for summer weekly renters. All customers will have to do is simply go to the shop's website, place what they wish to rent in the shopping cart and plug in where they'll be staying. When they arrive, all the rented beach supplies will already be waiting. When they leave, they need not return anything.
Besides rentals, the shop offers a number of beach essentials for purchase, including towels, beach games and other beach necessities.
The Lewes Surf Shanty, 820 Kings Highway, is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 302-260-1983 or go to www.lewessurfshanty.com.
