Completion of renovations, new stores, favorable weather contribute to sales, traffic increases.

The newly renovated Rehoboth Beach Tanger Outlets welcomed strong foot traffic and sales over Memorial Day weekend, officials said.

Tanger Outlets General Manager Amy Norgate credited the bump in traffic and sales to a number of factors, including the recent renovations at all three centers, Bayside, Oceanside and Surfside, and the popularity of new retailers spending their first summer season at the beach.

Traffic was up nearly 8 percent during the week of Memorial Day and on average, the outlets saw a 4.5 percent increase in traffic over the weekend.

The lineup of more than 100 brand-name factory retailers now includes Ecco, Sperry, Victoria's Secret, Francesca's, Bath and Body Works, Jones New York and the recent addition of Build-a-Bear workshop and Alex and Ani jewelers.

"A little turnover is good," Norgate said. "It keeps us fresh."

Winter renovations include a new, raised sidewalk that provides a more protected walkway for pedestrians across the parking lot at the Surfside outlet centers near Midway, energy-efficient LED signage, renovated restrooms and food courts and expanded shopper services, she said.

In all, the week of Memorial Day showed signs of a strong start for a summer shopping season in the Cape Region, Norgate said.

"For it to be this strong on a sunny, gorgeous weekend, we love it," she said.
