Joshua Dekker receives full scholarship to Wilmington University
Delmarva Christian High School 2015 graduate Joshua Dekker has been awarded a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Wilmington University. The scholarship, valued at $40,000 and funded by Wilmington University, was specifically designed for a DCHS student to honor the school's commitment to excellence and high academic achievement.
“This scholarship from Wilmington University was totally unexpected,” said Lynn Moore, a Delmarva Christian Schools board member and Wilmington University regional and history department chair. “It is a tribute to DCHS as a high school that is recognized for its academic rigor, many accomplishments, and great students, faculty, staff and administration. It is also attributed to the generosity and benevolence of Wilmington University.”
All DCHS seniors are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. Applicants were required to submit a personal essay, academic transcript and letter of recommendation that spoke to their Christian character.
“As one of DCHS’ founders and current board members, I felt that it would be best to remove myself from the decision-making process, and it would be more appropriate to present the applications to an impartial Wilmington University ad hoc committee, so that they could carefully review these applicants and make their choice. The committee’s job in deciding among these deserving candidates was very, very difficult,” said Moore before presenting the scholarship to Dekker at the Delmarva Christian High School commencement ceremony May 22.
In his personal essay, Dekker said that he would be “proud to be a Wilmington University Wildcat.” He plans to attend Wilmington University in the fall to study sports management.
