Millsboro's Quinn McColgan co-stars in 'Extinction'
Millsboro actress Quinn McColgan, the 13-year-old co-star of feature films "Non-Stop" and "Wishin' and Hopin'," said she plans to appear this weekend in support of her latest feature film, "Extinction," at screenings throughout the Cape Region.
This will be the sixth film for Quinn, a soon-to-be 8th grader at Worcester Preparatory School who enjoys lacrosse, swimming and dance when she's not making appearances on television shows, doing voice-overs or modeling for print advertisements.
Thus far, she said managing her schoolwork and professional career has been doable, even with her frequent trips to New York and longer absences when she films on location.
"My teachers are really supportive, and I just keep up with it to make sure I’m staying ahead," the actress said.
"Extinction" was shot in Budapest, Hungary, in 2014 and casts Quinn as Lu, the sheltered, rebellious daughter of co-star Jeffrey Donovan
"It’s a horror film, but it's got a family love story to it, " she said. "It's about two men, my dad and my neighbor, Matthew Fox, who are trying to protect my character from a new breed of zombies that evolved, and they are harder to beat."
Quinn's young character struggles with her desire to take action against zombies, who were previously eradicated but evolved to re-appear, while father and neighbor fight to protect her against them.
Quinn said, initially, the experience of filming a horror movie was a little intimidating.
"Instead of special effects, the people there were dressed as zombies in prosthetics, so it was a little scary at times, especially when I first started," she said. "After a while I just got used to it, and I could just talk to them like it was no big deal."
Quinn's next feature film, "Love the Coopers," is due to be released in November, she said. Her co-stars include Marisa Tomei and Diane Keaton.
"Extinction" will screen locally in a limited number of theaters before it is released to view at home, she said, and currently has a wider distribution in large cities nationwide.
The Movies at Midway are slated to show "Extinction" at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 31-Aug. 1, and at 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 1-2.
Quinn plans to appear for autographs and questions at the Movies at Midway screenings on Saturday, Aug.1. For more information or to confirm screenings, call 302-645-0200.
