Junior Lifeguards kick up sand at Rehoboth Beach contest

August 7, 2015

For nearly 20 years, the Rehoboth Beach Patrol has played host to the Junior Lifeguard Olympics, where squads from around the Delaware and Maryland beaches have toughed out big waves and hot sand to show their skills in the heat of competition. This year, Aug. 3 was their big day to shine.

The local junior guard programs begin in late June and run to the beginning of August. Participants learn beach rules and guarding skills that will someday make them full-time veteran guards. The Junior Lifeguard Olympics show the accumulation of their training.

Events such as the run, swim, run race, paddleboard relay race, soft sand relay race, swim sprint competition, distance run, and beach flags were highly contested during the evening on Baltimore Avenue.

Even though there was no score kept during the event, the beachgoers will be the winners to have these future lifeguards to watch over them while they enjoy the ocean.
