Many members of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe have been planning and laboring to insure their 38th Annual Powwow is even more exciting and special than in years past. The tribal chief, tribal council, program directors, committee chairs and volunteers invite and welcome everyone to attend and learn about Nanticoke history and culture throughout the last 400 years.
This powwow will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and 13 in Millsboro, in a wooded area with ample parking for visitors including school and tour buses and motorcycles. Tribal trams will be used to transport visitors from the parking area to the powwow site. About 40 tribal American Indian vendors will be on site with a variety of items for sale such as arts and crafts, clothing, jewelry, paintings, pottery, leather work, wampum, dream catchers and much more. Food vendors will provide hotdogs, fries, fish, hamburgers, succotash, Indian tacos, Indian frybread and Pepsi products to drink.
All-day parking including admission is $10 per car; walk-in admission is $3 for adults and $3 for children, $5 for motorcycles, $25 for buses plus $3 to be collected by the bus driver for each person on the bus. Highway signs on Route 24, John J. Williams Highway, between Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach and Route 113 in Millsboro will guide visitors to the parking area/powwow site. Powwow parking area opens at 9 a.m. Saturday and the Grand Entry of flag bearers and American Indian dancers will be Saturday at noon with a second dance session at 4 p.m. Sunday begins with an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m., and Grand Entry and dancing will take place at 1 p.m.
Except during the Sunday worship service, seating is provided for powwow participants, dancers and handicapped individuals only. Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair and a friend. This event is family-oriented and children will enjoy native face painting and storytelling.
