Chanell Dagesse, third from left, is joined by her parents Kent and Maxine Lewis and her husband Chris prior to her talk. Degesse spoke about her wish when she was 13 and was diagnosed with leukemia. Living in Florida, she wished for a ski trip and she and her family spent a week in Maine skiing. Dagesse said "I decided we needed a family vacation to get us all away from everything that was going on." She went on to say "I never felt sick on the entire trip." BY STEVEN BILLUPS

The Make-A-Wish staff spoke about Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic. Since 1983 they have granted over 8,500 wishes in the local community. But for every wish granted, two more are waiting. They need local sponsors and partners to bring more wishes to Kent and Sussex counties. Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, along with Nassau Valley Vineyards, Fordham Brewery and Dogfish Head Brewery, held a "Wishes on Tap" fundraiser at Nassau Valley Vineyards Aug. 23.

Local restaurants were on hand serving up their fare while local businesses supplied many items for the silent and Chinese auctions. A recipient of a wish from Make-A-Wish, Chanell Dagesse, was also present to share how the experience affected her and her family's life.

Make-A-Wish's mission is "To grant wishes of children with life threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy." Wishes are more than just a nice thing. And they are far more than gifts, or singular events in time. Wishes impact everyone involved - wish kids, volunteers, donors, sponsors, medical professionals and communities. The impact varies. For wish kids, just the act of making their wish come true can give them the courage to comply with their medical treatments. Parents might finally feel like they can be optimistic. And still others might realize all they have to offer the world through volunteer work or philanthropy.
