Final Rehoboth lifeguard stand found

The last of seven Rehoboth Beach lifeguard stands floated out to sea has been found 250 miles south, off the beach of Salvo, N.C.

Upland, Pa. native Matt Doyle came across the stand just before he was about to cast his fishing line. He said he saw the white stand rolling in the strong rip current on the morning of Sept. 5. At first, Doyle said he thought the stand washed down from the nearby Outer Banks – Salvo is south of the Outer Banks on Hatteras Island. But when he and five of his friends pulled the stand in to shore, they found it had a Rehoboth sign.

Doyle said the stand was not dry-rotted, but had collected a lot of barnacles. The stand has been missing since July 9, when seven Rehoboth stands were dumped in the water and floated out to sea.

Three of the stands were found in Ocean City, Md., two more were found near Indian River Inlet and another was found in the area of Assateague Island.

Rehoboth police Chief Keith Banks said the city would have to determine the stand’s value and whether it is worth transporting it back to Rehoboth. The stands found in Ocean City and near Indian River Inlet were all returned to Rehoboth and put back in service.
