Lachman art receptions set Sept. 18, 19 at Philip Morton Gallery

September 18, 2015

There are not many people who can say they still love what they do after six decades, but for Al Lachman, painting is undeniably as natural as breathing. Celebrating his 61st year of painting, award-winning master colorist Al Lachman brings over 25 new works to Philip Morton Gallery in Rehoboth Beach, in an exhibit opening Friday, Sept. 18. There are two opening receptions to meet Lachman. One is from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, and the other is from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19. The receptions are open to all.

Lachman paints intuitively, pouring himself into the painting while inviting the viewer to accompany him on a journey. He is an accomplished painter, instructor, juror and author celebrating a career milestone of 61 years of painting. Over the years, he has incorporated his artistic vision and vast knowledge with oils, pastels, acrylic and mixed media creating his own bold, colorful, spontaneous and painterly style.

Lachman puts his thumb upon the pulse of life and records it. In that mystical beat lies the unknown, and he would but make it known. Being both innovator and spectator, he exists as an intrinsic part of that rhythm. "Each painting begins with a premise, and I rarely use the same one twice," he said. "It is based on what I see and what I am feeling at that moment. I do not think that painting is about technique. It is about a particular perception of the world around us. The premise creates the periphery of my intent. It is a limitation that gives both to the creative forces within me. This approach takes us into uncharted waters with each new painting. Adventure awaits us, and we are not limited by our knowledge or lack of it. Creativity comes from inspiration, and we are inspired and influenced by others, by their uniqueness. I believe everyone is special and has something to offer. This is how we grow, by giving of ourselves to others, and by so doing we give value to our lives."

Born in 1936, Lachman was classically trained in oil painting at the Art Students League, the School of Visual Arts and Syracuse University. He has received numerous awards including Best of Show at the Pastel Society of America Annual Show in New York City, which is the highest honor bestowed upon any U.S. pastelist annually.

Lachman is known for his luminous colors and expressive paintings of Bucks County barns and landscapes, as well as his accomplished works of The Homeless series shown as part of the Contemporary Eye exhibition at the James A. Michener Museum. His paintings continue to garner the attention of art collectors for fine art investment as well as receiving numerous accolades and honors over the years.
