WHO Stole My Bacon

This former Bacon Lover wasn’t going to let anyone tell me to stop eating meat!  Then came the heart attack and I had to undo the damage of years of “high risk” eating.

Now comes the WHO (World Health Organization) report spelling out what we’ve known for decades.  This hard-hitting report minces no words about the risks to human health of consuming processed and red meat (beef, pork and lamb).  But the backlash is well underway. So called “experts” are coming out of the woodwork to mollify the resistant public, for no one wants to hear bad news about the foods we love even if they are sickening us.  The Beef Board is countering with its own reports on the benefits of eating meat.  They are joined by some scientists, doctors and even nutritionists who are misleading the public with soothing misinformation about “moderation” and “insignificant” risk, while wagging a finger at WHO and questioning its research methods.

Unfortunately, the public gets caught in the middle between a devastating report about a favorite food and the bewildering backlash from those who have a vested interest in preserving the status quo.  As a result, nutritional confusion reigns. Or does it?

Maybe the public is waking up.  Perhaps the “unscientific” poll in the graphic above is showing a breakthrough in our desire to take control of our own health.  I hope so. After all, one quarter of respondents say they will lessen processed meat intake for the sake of their health!
