Delaware Technical Community College hosted Veterans Day events and activities at each campus Nov. 11. The Stanton Campus hosted a breakfast event, Celebrating Women in the Military. Sen. Tom Carper, Rep. John Carney and Sen. Chris Coons attended the breakfast to honor all veterans and specifically the brave women who served. Coons said, "Thank you, Delaware Tech for all you are doing for veterans. You make this not just a veteran-friendly college, but a veteran-centered college."
The Owens Campus in Georgetown held a breakfast to honor veterans and service members. The morning included a stirring rendition of the national anthem by Miss New Castle Taylor DuVall, a human services major. The theme of the breakfast was Commemorating the End of WWII. Joseph Colgan, a U.S. Navy retiree, shared his wartime experience.
The Terry Campus in Dover hosted lunch for student veterans and a flag ceremony featuring an Honor Guard from the Dover Air Force Base. In addition, the campus Veterans Inspiring Progress organization provided a free showing of the movie "Unbroken." VIP is a student veteran organization advised by a faculty member who is also a veteran. The group is designed to help veteran students connect, support and network with others who have served and to focus on issues important to the veteran community. Members of the campus community expressed their gratitude through a Three Words of Thanks campaign featuring three words that showed gratitude for veterans.
The George Campus in Wilmington held a ceremony and lunch, followed by a VIP student-led dialogue about veterans’ issues.
Delaware Tech President Dr. Mark Brainard said, “In addition to meaningful Veterans Day activities, the college is committed to serving and honoring our veterans and military service members all year long, and we will continue to create new programs and initiatives.”
Delaware Tech is proud to be a 2015 Military Friendly School. The Military Friendly School designation was awarded by Victory Media to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that embrace military students and dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
