Mariner Middle School AVID students help prepare meals for those in need

December 31, 2015

Mariner Middle School sixth- and seventh-grade AVID students visited the Milton Fire Station Dec. 22  in order to help with preparation of more than 1,900 meals for individuals in need.

Christina Saez, the event organizer, started this holiday food drive three years ago as a result of the public outpouring her family received when her brother and sister-in-law tragically passed away in a car accident. She wanted to find a way to give back to the local community. Saez says, “The community blessed us tremendously, and this was our way to say thank you. Our first year we fed 700 people, and this year we are preparing 1,900 meals to send to Dover, Bethany, Seaford and Laurel."

The Mariner students were involved from the onset. This is the third year the students have volunteered to prepare meals. The students help package meals, and decorate the boxes so recipients enjoy some holiday cheer. Jacob Alt, a seventh-grader, enjoys spending time helping. “You feel better about yourself during the holidays when you help others. I truly enjoy helping people," he said.
