Cake Bar: Baked goods for discriminating tastes
Lewes’ Second Street has a way of drawing adventurous entrepreneurs. Even though the nation’s economy is in a slump, new businesses and the expansion of existing ones keep the city’s primary retail district vital and diverse.
Americans believe competition is good for business, and Second Street is a good example of proof it’s true.
Bakeries, restaurants and bookstores have gone out of business on the street, only to be replaced with bakeries, restaurants and bookstores that offer something different or better than the businesses they replaced.
Cake Bar: Baked goods for discriminating tastes
Excellent baked goods can be hard to find. But if the urge for cake, cookies or specialty baked goods should strike, a stroll along Second Street would probably satisfy the craving.
Cake Bar will become the city’s most recent bakery as the shop’s owners move toward a Friday, April 1 soft opening. During the first week of the month they plan to gradually make available everything they have to offer.
“We will be a bakery and a bistro. The entry from Second Street will have bakery cases lining the wall on the left. They’ll contain all sorts of bakery items:
turnovers, sticky buns, cakes, cake slices, cannoli, éclairs and things like that,” said Jordan Ferger. Ferger will co-manage the Lewes location with husband Mike. Her mother, Jamie Williams, owns the business. The Lewes operation is an offshoot of Baltimore-based SugarBakers Cakes, where everything is being baked.
“We’ve redone everything – the floors, we’ve painted, the lighting. Everything is different, more exciting,” she said.
“We really focus on specialty cakes. You can order them or you can come in and pick up something out of the case,” Ferger said.
Cake Bar’s selection of specialty cakes has something for everyone who appreciate cakes: Smith Island, lemon mousse, chocolate decadence, apple crunch, red velvet fudge, amaretto raspberry, Pimlico, strawberry cream, Heaven and Hell, raspberry ribbon and chocolate oblivion.
There are also classic cakes including country carrot, black and white, classic ivory, coconut cream and German chocolate.
Ferger said 6-inch cakes would cost $30 and 10-inch cakes $40.
Cake Bar will also feature a full restaurant serving lunch and dinner and gourmet foods to go.
“We’re going to run specials called our Sandbox Lunch. You can choose a sandwich, bag of chips and a drink. We’ll put it in a little box, and you can take it to the beach or to work or anyplace,” Ferger said.
The old Second Street bar has been refinished, and a full alcoholic beverage menu will be featured including an extensive list of champagne and martini drinks.
Cake Bar is at 115 Second St. The phone number is 302-645-CAKE (2253).

Additional information for a Lewes-specific page is being developed and will be at the same address, but Ferger said it’s not yet online.
