The missing piece of the puzzle for many struggling with weight loss and maintenance is accountability. According to Dr. Layne Norton, 6 out of 7 overweight or obese individuals will lose weight a significant amount of weight in their lifetime, but almost 95% regain it within three years. Despite the abundance of free information, obesity rates are at an all time high, suggesting that knowledge alone isn't the solution. Consistency and accountability are crucial for long-term success.
While all diets can work with consistent adherence, sustainable weight loss requires a lifestyle change. Accountability plays a pivotal role in this transformation.
My journey changed when I started holding myself accountable, regardless of setbacks. It's not about perfection but about minimizing the impact of occasional slips. The key is to get back on track promptly. Many people make the mistake of justifying a single unhealthy meal as a reason to abandon their plan for an extended period and adopt the “I’ll start back on Monday” approach. This can lead to weight gain and make it even harder to restart once Monday rolls around
If you're working with a personal trainer or coach, accountability should be their top priority. They should provide a feasible plan and hold you accountable for following it. Even if you're going solo, consistency and accountability are essential for long-term success. If your trainer or coach isn't holding you accountable, are they really interested in you achieving your goals or are they trying to keep you as a long term client. They should encourage and celebrate your wins while also challenging you and keeping you focused during setbacks. Whether you're working with me or another trainer/coach or pursuing your health goals independently, accountability should be your number one priority.
