C-17 Flyover, Virtual Running Events and a Whimsical Photo Contest are all Highlights of the Upcoming Coastal Events Calendar
Heading into the middle of May, all signs are pointing toward things opening back up at the Delaware and Maryland beaches very soon. We’re counting the days, and we hope you are as well!
Of course, we want our reopening to be done as safely and as responsibly as possible. But both Delaware Gov. John Carney and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan have released plans on at least partially opening up their states soon, so we’re encouraged by these early signs.
In the meantime, we at the Oldfather Group have decided to let our local media outlets inform you on COVID-19 related news for the time being. We want to instead focus on good and positive things here in our regular “Weekender Blog,” and we’re going to do just that moving forward.
What we’re featuring for the time being is going to be mostly virtual options, but there are a number of great local things to talk about. And as soon as we’re able to again feature live and in-person events, rest assured we’ll be here to tell you all about what’s happening at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.
So let’s remove ourselves from all of the bad news for a few minutes and focus more on the positive and the uplifting, shall we? Who’s with us?
C-17 Flyby Event. We realize this is happening on Wednesday afternoon, but we’re hoping that enough of you will see this in time and can witness it live and firsthand.
Building on similar events in New York and other cities, Dover Air Force Base will be conducting a “C-17 Flyby” on Wednesday, May 6, that will begin in New Castle County and work its way down to Lewes and Seaford at 3:45 p.m., and 3:50 p.m., respectively.
Head out in your yards around that time, if you’re able, and help Dover Air Force Base and all of us deliver a loud and resounding “thank you” to all of our first responders at Bayhealth, Beebe Healthcare and Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.
Seashore Striders Virtual Running Events. The Rehoboth Beach based Seashore Striders will be hosting three more virtual running events in May, beginning with the group’s latest team challenge that starts on May 6 and concluding with the 27th annual Masser 5 Miler on May 24.
Along with the Justin’s Beach House Memorial Day Weekend run on May 23, these three events will all be conducted virtually. This gives runners and walkers a chance to participate, even with the restrictions that are currently in place.
Many of us at the Oldfather Group have already signed up for the May “team challenge” event, which we also participated in during the month of April. We encourage others to do so as well by visiting the Seashore Striders Team Challenge Page and signing up.
The May challenge begins at midnight on May 6 and runs through noon on May 24, with seven pre-determined distances that must be completed during the 19 days of the challenge.
All teams are made up of three runners, which can include an all male team, an all female team, a co-ed team or even a so-called “paws” team, which can include any combination of human and canine runners.

Rehoboth Beach Museum Photo Contest. This is currently being developed and more details will be available next week, but the plan is to run a localized version of a popular contest recently introduced by The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Basically, you choose your favorite photograph from the museum and use household items (or even children and pets) to recreate it in the best way you can. You can be serious, or you can be whimsical and attempt to make it as humorous as possible.
Check out this story on the Getty competition to see examples of what we mean.
Just get creative and make it fun!
Keep at eye on the Rehoboth Beach Museum’s Facebook and YouTube pages for more information, as well as this space next week where we’ll have many more details on this fun local contest.
