Goepel Earns DAISY Award for Beyond Compassionate Care

June 18, 2024

Bayhealth’s Joni Goepel, RN, cares for patients at the Bayhealth Sussex Campus and has earned a DAISY Award for her high quality care.

The DAISY Award is a “thank you” to extraordinary nurses. This program recognizes nurses who show compassion and determination through the care they provide. The DAISY Award honors the super-human work that nurses everywhere do for their patients along with their families.

The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes Family wanted to recognize the nurses who cared for Patrick and all the other “unsung heroes” of the nursing profession.

The phrase “to be seen is to be loved” is time and time again proven to be true – especially within health care. Goepel embodies this phrase as she goes out of her way to make her patients feel understood and comfortable.

When caring for a patient who had been in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for several months, Goepel went out of her way to make her patient feel comfortable within her own skin.

Even when her patient felt lost, Goepel stepped in to make the patient feel like herself again. She did this by doing the patient’s hair, putting on her makeup, and talking with the patient even when the patient couldn’t communicate.

“Goepel SAW me, and helped me see myself again, and I fought because she fought with me, for me, everyday; she is my guardian angel put right where she needed to be when I needed her most. She not only saved my life, she saved me," said Goepel’s grateful patient and nominator.

DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients, and families. If you know a Bayhealth nurse who deserves to be nominated, visit Bayhealth.org/DAISY and fill out the nomination form.
