April 14, 2023

Each year in April, Lewes is beautified with the blooming of tens of thousands of tulips planted by Lewes in Bloom members and volunteers the previous fall. 2023 marked the 14th year LIB teamed up with Lewes Chamber of Commerce to create a wonderland of flowers throughout the city.

While the blooming of tulips is not an exact science, the two groups kicked off the celebrations the weekend of April 1 and will continue through Sunday, April 16. Before, during and after the scheduled events, more than a hundred varieties of tulips in shades of red, white, pink, orange, yellow and more can be seen all around the First Town in the First State.

A Tiptoe To The Tulips map is available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, from the Lewes Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center located at the Fisher-Martin House in Zwaaenendael Park; copies can also be found throughout the historic commercial district. Some 32,000 bulbs were planted last fall in more than 20 different locations around the city.

In addition to flowers, residents and visitors can also check out Feathered Friends, an art exhibition running through Sunday, April 30, at the Peninsula Gallery, 520 E. Savannah Road. A spring geranium sale to benefit the GFWC Zwaanendael Women’s Club and its community service programs runs through April 15. Flowers can be picked up Friday, May 5, at the Lewes in Bloom warehouse, 217 Schley Ave.
