Amazon targets Seaford for distribution center
Amazon has plans to open its first rural distribution center on the Delmarva Peninsula in a 104,000-square-foot warehouse on Dulaney Street in Seaford.
Upon completion of renovations to be completed in May, the Amazon facility is expected to provide hundreds of full- and part-time jobs starting at $15 an hour. The warehouse, once used to store material from the former DuPont Nylon Plant, has more than 550 parking spaces on a 12-acre site in the western section of the city.
Amazon has 110 distribution/fulfillment centers in the United States.
In partnership with the City of Seaford and Gillis Gilkerson, principal Brad Gillis of NAI Coastal brokered the leasing agreement with Amazon, one of the world's largest companies, with more than a million workers. Amazon, the third-richest company in the world, had net revenue of $386 billion in 2020, a 38 percent increase from 2019.
“Sussex County is in the midst of experiencing rapid, widespread residential and commercial growth,” Gillis said. “Amazon's establishment of a physical presence on the Delmarva Peninsula signals the community's continued development alongside its population. As the world's largest online marketplace and one of the country's top private employers, Amazon is a lucrative addition to our regional economy.”
“The creation of new jobs is a huge win for our city and beyond,” said Seaford Mayor David Genshaw. “We look forward to working with them in their efforts to better serve their customers here on Delmarva.”
Prior to leasing, Gillis negotiated the sale of the warehouse property for $7 million.
