An Amish wheat field west of Dover in 1985

July 9, 2019

The 2019 barley and wheat harvest in Sussex County and throughout the rest of Delaware is mostly complete for this year - the grain stored, the stalks cut for straw and second crops of late soybeans planted behind the wheat. This photo from 1985 shows soybeans rising in a wheat field tended by its Amish owners. The wheat kernels have been collected, and the wheat straws are drying in stacks spread across the field. According to the federal crop reporting service for Delaware, farmers at the end of June 2019 were reporting crop conditions for barley and wheat to be more than 50 percent in the good to excellent range.
