Coal tender on track for early morning arrival in Lewes
The much-anticipated arrival of the Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association’s coal tender is on track for Thursday, April 10.
The equipment is scheduled to arrive on a truck at 6 a.m. at the Kings Highway-Savannah Road intersection.
LJRBA officials said if there are delays en route, the arrival could be pushed back to 9 a.m.
There could also be traffic delays on Kings Highway while the equipment is being moved.
The truck is expected to back down Kings Highway and turn onto Adams Avenue. The coal tender will then be rolled off onto the railroad track.
It will join the red caboose as part of the Lewes Junction historic display.
The caboose was recently pushed about 100 feet farther west on the track to make room for the new car.
The coal tender was built from original plans of the correct vintage by a company in Willow Street, Pa.
It was recently rolled out of the paint shop. Stenciling will be added once it is put in place at the Lewes site.
A restored stream locomotive is expected to be added to the Lewes Junction display in the future.
