Bipartisan conversations seem to be increasingly uncommon during these polarizing times, but Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, and Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, recently demonstrated that collaborative conversations can, and are, routinely still occurring.
The two lawmakers took part in an April 4 program titled Reaching Out Across the Aisle, moderated by Heidi Nasstrom Evans, Rehoboth Beach Museum executive director, and held at the museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
The event, which attracted a capacity audience, focused on how the two parties regularly collaborate without conflict. The overwhelming theme, said both legislators, is to step out of their “echo chambers” and listen to what the other side is saying, so those who thought they were opponents just might find out they have more in common than they think.
