Ann Baldwin Smith, devout Christian
Ann Baldwin Smith, “Cherry,” 85, of Potomac, Md., passed away peacefully Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, surrounded by loved ones. Ann was born Jan. 30, 1937, in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late Rignal Woodward Baldwin and Ann Williams Baldwin. She attended The Calvert School, Garrison Forrest School, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., where she was the class president for two years and was on the synchronized swim team. Ann enjoyed lifelong friendships with many of her former classmates, culminating in an annual birthday luncheon in Baltimore, Md.
Ann was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Potomac, Md., since 1974, where she served on the vestry, as well as being a lay reader, captain of the Altar Guild, co-founder of the Savvy Seniors and a member of the Pastoral Care Team.
Ann was a former member of Bethesda Country Club, where she played on the tennis team for 46 years, serving as captain and organizer for many years. She was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Club in Baltimore, Md., for 50 years.
As a committed volunteer, Ann was a member and president of the Potomac Chapter of The Questers, an organization that keeps history alive by supporting preservation, restoration and education throughout the world.
Throughout her life, Ann took great pleasure in theater and was a longtime member of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., especially enjoying musicals.
Although Potomac was her permanent residence for 50 years, Ann spent every summer since her childhood vacationing in Dewey Beach at her family’s beloved cottage. There she could be found taking long walks on the beach, collecting shells and sea glass, fearlessly diving through waves, eating crabs on the porch, watching Wimbledon and spending quality time with her family. It was in Dewey Beach where she met her late husband of 36 years, Harry L. Smith.
Ann is survived by her four children, Ann Elizabeth “Betsy” Plowman of Lewes, Harry L. Smith (Liz) of Boston, Mass., Eleanor Baldwin Smith (Jacki) of Baltimore, Md., and Stephen Woodward Smith of Potomac, Md.; and her six grandchildren, Annie Plowman, Emma Plowman, Ryan Plowman, Liliana Costa-Smith, Elena Costa-Smith and Isabel Costa-Smith. She is also survived by her brother, Rignal W. Baldwin (Mary), their four children, and her three cousins.
A funeral service for Ann will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 16, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 10033 River Road, Potomac, Md. A reception will be held immediately following the service in the St. Francis Parish Hall.
