Appo beats Cape 21-14 on Legends Night

Cape faces St. Georges on Senior Night
October 31, 2022

Cape head football coach Mike Frederick took time before the Friday night home game to introduce himself to the lineup of Legends past and present being honored with inclusion in the Legends Stadium Ring of Honor.

“Just a class move on coach Frederick’s part,'' said Legend Ruth Skoglund, who was there for the ceremony. “What a nice young man.”

The game featuring the Vikings of Cape versus the Jaguars of Appoquinimink was billed by the Cape coaches as a battle of two teams that were mirror images. And the Vikings’ side of the two-way mirror sustained three major cracks that Mr. Go Glass couldn’t fix.

Cape lost 21-14, coughing up the football three times, and saw a hard-fought game, which the Vikings led 14-13 with eight minutes remaining, tilt in favor of Appoquinimink 21-14.

“That one hurt more than most,” Frederick said. “The players really embraced the moment and wanted to put their best foot forward on Legends Night. They want the community to see just how good they can be. We’ve been terrific all year taking care of the football. But credit to Appo for the hustle play at the end of the half and the caused fumbles when they needed them.”

Lucas Stevenson caught a Joe Coveleski screen pass pass late in the first half of a 7-7 game and hugged the sideline for 60 yards, but somewhere short of the goal line a Jaguar pawed the ball loose and it rolled across the goal line and out the back of the end zone for a touchback.

“I feel bad for the players, as they went toe to toe and weren’t rewarded for their hard work this time,” Frederick said.

Cape scored early in the third quarter off a short run by Maurki James. The Wilson Ingerski kick made the score 14-7.

Daniel McConomy, the Jaguars’ star running back, carried the ball 37 times for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on a 42-yard touchdown, but a botched point after made the score 14-13.

McConomy scored on a fourth and 3, followed by a two-point conversion run for the final score of 21-14.

James recorded his first game under 100 yards, carrying the ball 23 times for 63 yards with another 68 yards on screen passes.

Cape falls to 4-4 with a Senior Night home game Friday, Nov. 4, versus St. Georges followed by a road game at Smyrna.

St. Georges is 2-6, but they gave Sussex Central a tough game Saturday before falling 33-28.

Frederick: “Very pleased with how JoCo threw the football and made some vital checks at the line. Heading forward, our room for error is gone. We are banged up, but so is everyone else this time of year. Nothing to hold back. Just love the fact that this special group gets another opportunity to play together Friday on Senior Night. Should be a good one.”

Cape has 10 seniors on the 2022 roster.
