Arlene Littleton to retire as CHEER executive director

CHEER Executive Director Arlene Littleton has announced her retirement after more than 30 years in the top management position of Sussex County’s largest senior citizen service agency. Since 1985, Littleton has been recognized as a leader and innovator in the senior services field championing programs to support Sussex County’s mature population and their caregivers.

Her efforts have earned her a reputation at the county, state and even national levels. During her 30-year tenure with CHEER, Littleton has developed and expanded services and programs as the senior population has grown faster in Sussex County than anywhere in the state.

Today, CHEER operates seven senior centers, a community center, congregate and homebound meal programs, a fleet of handicapped-accessible buses, a Personal Assistance Services program, Adult Day Care program, Mobile Mini-Market grocery store on wheels and a variety of smaller service programs that touch the lives of hundreds of Sussex seniors every day. Every one of these programs is a direct result of Littleton’s leadership.

“I enjoy the people; they matter to me and we matter to them,” said Littleton. “I have gotten more joy and satisfaction from seeing all the faces at CHEER than you could ever imagine. We make a difference.”

For thousands of senior citizens over the years, CHEER has made the difference helping people be able to continue living in their own homes with nutrition, transportation, home care and social services. Caregivers have benefited from CHEER respite, day care and a wide range of supportive services. Each of these programs reflects Littleton’s commitment to ensure that senior citizens throughout Sussex County continue to have the best possible lives remaining in their own homes.

As Littleton moves toward retirement Friday, April 1, CHEER’s Board of Directors has announced that CHEER Deputy Director Kenneth Bock will be assuming the executive director position. Bock has served as CHEER’s deputy director under Littleton for the past 10 years and has been involved with the CHEER organization for more than 30 years.

“I am grateful for the opportunities CHEER has provided me and for the strong foundation of services developed under Arlene’s guidance,” Bock said. “The CHEER staff has a commitment and dedication that is second to none. Our senior population continues to grow, and the needs will continue to grow right along with them. CHEER will continue to be there as that caring friend and neighbor, growing and expanding to be there for every Sussex County senior and their caregivers. I am honored to be part of such an organization.”
