Austen Cave, 22, of Delmar barely made it to the line for the 7:30 a.m. start time for the 26th annual Run for JJ 5K Aug. 13 in Rehoboth Beach. Cave is a young cancer survivor, so being almost late for a race is not a catastrophic life event likely to throw him off his game.
He led 162 runners post to paddock, blowing away the field in a time of 16:43. Masters runner Charlie Stern, 41, of Silver Spring, Md., was second overall in 18:18.
Olivia Montini, 18, a rising sophomore at Swarthmore, was the overall women’s winner in 19:47.
Lisa Sherman, 49, of Washington, D.C., was the women’s masters winner in 23:27.
The Delaware state record for the 5K was set at the JJ race in 2007 by Nelson Kiplaget of Kenya in 13:52.
Jimmy Rubin, 51, (19:56) and his wife Rebecca Rubin, 51, (23:40) completed the Rubin sandwich, both winning first-place medals in the 50-54 age group.
A complete listing of expanded race results can be found at seashorestriders.com. The next Seashore Striders race is the ninth annual Rehoboth Beach Firefightin’ 5K, set for Sunday, Aug. 20, in Rehoboth Beach.
