Bay breeze blows over 254 runners at Penn State College Day 5K
“Summer breeze makes me feel fine, blowin’ through the jasmine in my mind.” - Seals and Crofts, 1972.
The Dewey Devil went down to Dagsworthy Avenue July 29, with a bay breeze that welcomed 254 runners for the 21st annual Penn State College Day 5K.
“There’s a nice breeze blowing off Rehoboth Bay, but out there running it doesn’t offer much relief,” said John Dowling, 62, of Ocean View. “It’s just hot out there.”
Joey Cintavey, 22, of Newark was the overall winner in 15:50. Mike Wardian, 49, world-class ultra runner, was second overall and first masters in 17:13. If the race was 97 miles longer, Wardian would have run down Cintavey.
Owen Parsons, 15, an Archmere runner who lives in West Chester, Pa., was third overall in 17:51. Chris Calandra, 22, of Lewes was fourth in 18:02, while Kyle Brightbill, 48, of Philly rounded out the top five leaderboard in 18:13.
The top five females were Sara Girotto, 47, 19:21; Lexie Plansek, 19, 20:06; Anna Bokius, 15, 20:32; Lauren Sapp, 22, 20:47; and masters winner Amy Rome, 56, of Dallas, Pa., 20:50.
The top 13 runners broke 20 minutes. There were 139 females and 113 males in the race.
The largest age groups were females 50-59 and males 60-69.
