For Beacon Middle School students in the AVID elective classes, the early months of the academic year have been geared toward advancing college and career preparedness.
AVID, standing for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a class that provides students who elect to participate with opportunities to learn about a range of college and career pathways, and to take college campus tours.
AVID seventh- and eighth-graders traveled Oct. 31 to Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa.,
where they toured the beautiful campus, spoke with admissions staff, and ate lunch in the dining hall complex. The visitors interacted with current students, asked questions about campus life and academics, and learned about the university’s many highlights.
Cape Henlopen High School graduate and Cedar Crest College alumna Autumn Reynolds visited AVID classes Oct. 7. While discussing her pursuit of a master’s degree in forensic science, Reynolds talked about how to look for scholarship opportunities to help finance postsecondary education.
Visiting with AVID students Nov. 14 was Sarah Oshoush, a Cape High alumna and Delaware State University graduate. Owner of JVSTLashes in Dover, Oshoush spoke with the students about the benefits of having a postsecondary education degree, and the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur.
