The Beacon Middle School boys’ basketball team moved to 10-1 with a 62-25 win over district rival Mariner Middle Feb. 7 at Cape High. Mariner fell to 3-6 to finish the season.
Beacon started out running hot, hitting for 24 points in the first quarter. Mariner regained its footing and outscored Beacon in the second quarter by three. After the halftime break, the Beacon squad outscored the Mariner team 30-9 to garner the win.
Jameson Tingle led the Beacon squad with 17 points. LaMar McCoy added 12. Each of them scored 10 in the first quarter. Daveyonn Conquest and Jordan Thomas added 10 and nine points, respectively. Trey Batson, Oz Daisey, Amari Jackson and Navin Duffy rounded out the scoring for the Vikings.
“It was a great to get to play in front of the Cape fans again,” said Beacon head coach Sean O’Grady. “The players were more than excited to show off how hard they have been working as a team.”
The Mariner Vikings were led by Cameron Greene with seven points. Geordan Downing added five, while Christopher Prince hit for three, and Camryn Joyner, Asher Woods, Trizton Willey and Joseph Ruark rounded out the team’s scores.
“I am proud of the effort our boys gave against Beacon,” said Mariner coach Bryant Hazzard. “I encouraged them to go out and compete, and I believe they did that. We knew what Beacon had. They are one of the best middle school teams in the state this year – a lot of talented young men. Job well done to coach O'Grady and the coaching staff on the win and an amazing season. This year was full of challenges. According to our 3-6 record, one would easily conclude that we were unsuccessful. However, I would argue the contrary. I believe our eighth-graders gave us all they had, which I am proud of. I am really excited about the coming years. I believe our sixth- and seventh-graders will turn the corner over the summer and turn heads next season.”
