The Beacon Middle School girls’ basketball team used a tenacious defense and keen shooting in the second half to defeat a scrappy Mariner squad 28-12 Feb. 10 at Cape Henlopen High School.
The highly anticipated game started as a defensive struggle, with both teams combined scoring only five points in the first quarter. Beacon came alive in the second stanza, shutting out Mariner 8-0, and took an 11-2 lead into the halftime break.
“It was a tight first quarter,” said Beacon coach Steve Re. “We shot really well in the second, third and fourth.”
The Beacon team outscored Mariner 17-10 in the second half to finish the game 28-12 and move to a 9-2 record. Mariner falls to 5-5.
Mya Maull led Beacon with 10 points. Faith Re tallied five, while Lainey Shockro hit for four. LuLu Rishko and Natalya Roundtree each added three and Lindsey D’Ambrogi hit a three.
Ava Iacono led Mariner with six points. Grace Wiggins added four and Jurnee White hit a basket.
