Former longtime Polytech coach Lynn Richardson launched into her first season at the controls of the Beacon Middle School team with seven straight shutouts and a goal differential of 82-0.
Selbyville showed up Oct. 27 and tied Beacon 1-1, then Oct. 28, visiting Smyrna played Beacon on Bermuda 1 at Cape High in front of a big crowd that included Cape’s varsity hockey team dressed in Halloween outfits.
Smyrna’s Bree Moffett scored in the first quarter. Beacon responded with second-quarter goals from Leah Sullivan and Atia Sabbagh for a 2-1 halftime advantage.
Smyrna was on the doorstep of the Cape cage for much of the fourth quarter threatening to tie the game.
A last-minute shot got by goalie Isabella Mekulski, but defender Lauren Marchetti was there to save the day, knocking the ball away and preserving the Beacon victory.
Beacon was scheduled to close out the season Nov. 1, facing Mariner at Champions Stadium.
