The Beacon Middle School soccer team ran past a tough Mariner squad 4-0 May 11 at Cape’s Champions Stadium. The win finished off an undefeated season for the Lewes-based Vikings with a 10-0-1 record.
Lindsay Hassell started the scoring for Beacon off an assist from Elizabeth Downer. Downer scored a hat trick in the second half, with assists from Kailey McMahon and Hassell.
Beacon’s defense held the tough Mariner squad scoreless and was praised by head coach Chip Wilt: “The defense contained Mariner all night led by goalie Brynne Fox and field players [Kailey] McMahon, Elle Sprague, Lily Touw and Delaney Huxtable. My captains Brynne Fox, Ellie Sprague, Elizabeth Downer and Kailey McMahon gave the team great leadership throughout the season.”
“I’m incredibly proud of how the girls played against a very strong Beacon lineup,” said Mariner head coach Corbin Bean. “They have progressed throughout the entire season. We gave each team on our schedule a very competitive match, improved upon last year’s record by recording four wins, and really built upon our knowledge of the game. We have a very young team, so I’m excited to see the momentum that we carry into next spring. Great job, Mariner.”
The Beacon girls' B team went undefeated on the season with a 2-0 shutout of the Mariner B squad. Goals were scored by Maheli Lopez Deleon and Peyton Jones.
