John Becker, 44, ran shirtless down Dagsworthy Avenue on a steamy Saturday morning Aug. 12 prior to the inaugural Community Matters Foundation 5K.
Becker, a Henderson High of West Chester graduate who lives in Berwyn, Pa., runs the occasional race in Dewey along with his wife Juli.
“I think I can run in the mid-16s today,” Becker said when questioned. “I don’t see anyone here who can push me to run faster.”
Becker sailed the course like a sea breeze in a sunfish regatta, easing to a 16:43 finish.
Matt Sparacino, 45, the Harrington Harrier, was second overall and masters winner in 18:41.
Melissa Wiley, 37, of Ocean City, Md., claimed the overall women’s title in 21:07.
Rick Poppleton, 70, the rubber band man of road running, ran 22:34 for eighth overall.
Renee Baffone, 46, of Wilmington won the women's masters race in 25:02.
A total of 80 runners took part in the inaugural race.
The next Races2Run local event is the PFC Joseph “Dimps” Marquez Memorial 5K at 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at Irish Eyes in Lewes.
