Benbow wins Outlet Liquors 5K; race benefits Dewey Beach Patrol
The Seven Sisters of Dewey Beach summer running and walking series continued Aug. 5 with 483 registered runners and walkers participating in the Fourth Outlet Liquors 5K. The race featured and benefited the Dewey Beach Patrol. Enos Benbow of Georgetown continued his winning streak with a 16:41 winning time, using the event as speed work for the upcoming Chicago Marathon, which will be held in October. Sarah Mandes of Arlington, Va., won the female division in 19:27. Master's prizes went to Jason Tripp from Ellicot City, Md. in 17:41 and Aimee Baylor of Lewisburg, Pa. in 21:31.
The highlight of the race was the participation of members of the Dewey Beach Patrol, who were there as volunteers at registration, on the course and at the finish line. The DBP also had three teams which competed in the Beach House team competition. The proceeds from the race, donated by the Highway One Group, help fund the Dewey Beach Patrol competition team's trip to Cape May, N.J., for the United States Lifeguard Association's national competition.
Twenty-three teams competed in the Beach House team competition, and the Certified Running Nuts team retained the title. Pirate Pete and Pirate Woody and their pirate friends cheered the runners and walkers on at the finish line. A post race party on the deck of the Rusty Rudder included watermelon, pasta salad, Danish and beer. The next Seven Sisters running events, the 10th Highway One 10K/5K Run/Walk, 8 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Rusty Rudder. Complete race results can be found on Races2run.com.
