Known as the Best Little Race in the State, the 41st annual Dam Mill 5K will be the ninth race of the Seashore Striders Summer Racing Series. It be held at Cupola Park in Millsboro beginning at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, July 28. This year’s highlights include having a new course with only one major turn in the race, a water spray both ways at the half-mile and two-and-a-half-mile marks, cool sleeveless T-shirts, large 4-inch age group medals, post-race celebration featuring Dairy Queen, and the popular Dam Mill Hall of Fame induction. Proceeds will benefit the Millsboro Fire Department, and it does not get any better than that.
Jake Bamforth competes in Lake Placid
Lcal pro triathlete Jake Bamforth, living and training now in Fort Collins, Colo., dove into Mirror Lake for what would be his first attempt at a full Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Close to 4,000 age group athletes waited on the beach for the first two waves of pro men and pro women to enter the lake for the 2.5-mile, two-loop swim course.
Bamforth left transition still in 32nd place and had a great ride, biking the 112-mile hilly course in 4:54:55 to move up to 30th place.
The final leg of the race was a full marathon, which Bamforth had never officially completed in a race. After the first 13.1-mile split in just over 1:31:00, he found himself in 27th place and feeling strong. Bamforth finished with a 3:10:39 marathon, the 26th best, and a combined overall time of 9:06:18.
“I have completed longer swims, longer bikes and much longer runs, however I have never competed for nine hours at the intensity of Lake Placid,” said Bamforth. “Most of the challenges I have completed have been slow and steady for a long period of time, but my Lake Placid race was hard and fast through all three parts of the course right from the cannon start.”
