The Big House of Pancakes was rocking with wrestling Dec. 11, as Cape hosted Sussex Tech in the first dual-meet match of the season.
Coach Scott Layfield of the Ravens began his 30th season of coaching, while Cape’s Chris Mattioni embarked on his 28th campaign.
Cape won the closely contested match 44-31.
“I think pins by Blake Walker at 113 and Jacob Goodsell at 175 were huge for us,” said assistant coach Shane Jensen.
Cape was all about the bonus points, recording six pins, beginning with freshman Blake Walker at 113, then bolstered by Colin Poulis at 144, Nick Walker at 150, Jacob Goodsell at 175, Luke Arnold-Decyk at 215 and Patrick Donahue at 285.
Cape earned a tech fall from Austin Guerrieri at 120 and a 6-5 win by decision from Max Meadows at 138.
The Ravens stayed close, closing to 26-22 after a Bennett Brumbley tech fall win at 165 with nine bouts in the books. But they were outscored 18-9 over the final five bouts.
Tech got pins from Logan King at 132 and Dustin Elliott at 157. Anthony Andrews at 126 won by tech fall, Hayden Coulbourne at 190 won by major decision and Parker Hampton at 106 won by tech fall.
“We have a good team this year,” said Brumbley. “We have a few guys in the lineup that just need experience.”
Cape will host Milford Wednesday, Dec. 18, on Teacher Appreciation Night. The Beast of the East tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center is set for Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 21 and 22.
Sussex Tech will grapple at the Delmar Invitational Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13 and 14, before hosting Dover Wednesday, Dec. 18.
