Big Wheels Races raise $8,000 for breast cancer research

August 31, 2011

For the third year, The Starboard and its shark mascot helped take a bite out of breast cancer by turning its parking lot into a madcap raceway and hosting the Breast Cancer Big Wheels Races.

The Aug. 20 event, manned by a core group of 13 volunteers, featured races for competitors of all ages and types - from elementary school children to Washington, D.C. firefighters. Spectators cheered as decorated Big Wheels and riders took to the course, tearing around cones to each race's finish.

“In these races, we're all winners,” said event organizer Suzy Casey. “With the help of our sponsors we raised $8,000 to support the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Research Fund.”

Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery has pledged to use The Starboard to help with the fight against breast cancer. The Big Wheels Race was the second major event hosted by The Starboard this year to raise money for breast cancer research and community outreach.
“We are all affected by breast cancer in one way or another - as individuals or through our moms, sisters, wives, daughters, or girlfriends,” Montgomery said. “Personally, I was extremely lucky to enjoy 25 extra years with my own mom thanks to all the work and technology they have done with fighting the nasty disease. When she passed away a few months ago, I decided to honor her by continuing the work she did to raise money over the years.”

Montgomery is currently working with the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition on an inaugural 5K race for Breast Cancer Research to be held Saturday, Oct. 8.

Casey says she is already planning for Big Wheels Race 2012, adding that she is grateful for the community that supported this year's event. “I would just like to thank the many people who donated their time before, during and after the event to ensure its success. We wouldn't be able to pull it off without their support,” she said.
