Cape’s Sara Kilby celebrated her 18th birthday by sinking a 30-yard direct kick in double overtime to give the Vikings a 3-2 victory over Lake Forest April 25.
The Vikings were ahead 2-0 on goals by Emily Cook and a Lake own goal with two minutes to go in the first half when the Spartans’ Rowan McCloskey put one past goalie Brianna Burrell to cut Cape’s lead to one point at the break.
The Spartans tied the game two minutes into the second half on a penalty kick by Lillian Wood.
The back-and-forth match moved into the second overtime when a direct kick was awarded to the Vikings. KIlby painted the upper corner with with a blast that cleared Lake goalkeeper Raegan Starkey’s outreached hand to garner the victory.
“I just knew I wanted to aim for the top right corner,” Kilby said. “Rule No. 1 for me is to frame the goal. If I can frame the goal, that’s half the battle. I took a breath and told myself I can do this.”
The Vikings’ center midfielder enforcer Shannon Rath set the tone in the midfield after three straight losses.
“We all knew we had to come back from that,” she said. “Now that we have the win, hopefully we can all play more aggressive and put out the effort we need to keep it going.”
“I’m really glad we were able to pull the game out in overtime,” said Cape coach and proud father Patrick Kilby. “I am disappointed that we gave up a two-goal lead, but we showed resilience by winning and getting the win against a well-coached Lake team.”
Cape junior Nevaeh Landis was credited with an assist.
The Vikings outshot the Spartans 9-5 and held a 6-1 advantage in corners. The B&B goal crew of Brianna Burrell and Brynne Fox teamed for seven saves.
Raegan Starkey made six saves for the Spartans.
The Vikings travel to Sussex Central Tuesday, April 30, to joust with the 5-2-2 Golden Knights.
