The Cape girls’ soccer squad scored three goals in nine minutes en route to a 3-0 win over Sussex Central April 30 in Georgetown.
It’s the fourth shutout for the Vikings, who move to 5-6 on the season.
The two teams jousted back and forth throughout the game, missing numerous scoring opportunities in the first 69 minutes. Then Vikings sophomore Katherine Rossi found a chink in the armor of the Knights in the 70th minute. She found space inside the penalty area and scored off a deflected shot. Just two minutes later, Rossi pounded a shot into the net for her second goal.
Nevaeh Landis scored Cape’s third goal with a minute remaining to add insurance.
“I think it took a long time for us to connect mentally and connect passes until we got into the second half,” said Rossi. “This win might motivate us a little more because we had losses in the past few games, so I think this game was good for us.”
“We changed our formations for the second half and that stretched them out,” said senior Emily Cook. “That made us go up more and have more chances at the goal.”
Ava Brown was credited with assists on both Rossi goals, while Lillian Holodick helped on the Landis goal.
“Sussex Central was pretty organized in stacking the back third to stymie our attack,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “At halftime, we switched to a 3-5-2, and we really were able to keep the ball for most of the second half. We created a lot of chances and finally broke through the last 10 minutes.”
The Vikings outshot the Knights 8-5 and held a 6-2 edge in corners.
Cape goalie Brianna Burrell and Central keeper Temperance Hammen-Smith each had five saves.
The Cape junior varsity team tied the Knights 0-0 to move to 6-1-1 on the season.
