Earlier this year, CAMP Rehoboth officials said they wanted to have a new executive director in place by Memorial Day. Well, they made that deadline – a couple of weeks early.

In a press release issued May 11, CAMP Rehoboth announced Dr. Kim Leisey, a Lewes resident, will be taking over as executive director July 10.

“After conducting a comprehensive national search, the board of directors selected Kim because of her widely respected leadership in creating strong, healthy and inclusive communities throughout her career,” said Wesley Combs, CAMP Rehoboth board president and search committee executive director.

Co-founded by Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald in 1991, CAMP Rehoboth is a community center serving the needs of LGBTQ+ people. Leisey is its third executive director and its first cisgender lesbian leader. Elkins served as executive director until he died in March 2018. David Mariner followed Elkins and led the organization for three years. Interim Executive Director Lisa Evans has been managing day-to-day operations since April 2022.

Leisey has lived in Lewes since December 2020 and has been visiting Rehoboth Beach since the early 1990s. She has a three-decade career in student affairs at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, including her current role as senior associate vice president for student affairs.

“I am honored to be working with the amazing team at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center,” said Leisey in a prepared statement. “My leadership will honor the important and beautiful legacy of Steve Elkins and Murray Archibald. The foundation they have created is strong and powerful. Together with the staff, the board and community, CAMP Rehoboth will continue to offer advocacy, support and connections among our LGBTQ+ community, and our friends and neighbors throughout Sussex County and Delaware at large.”

The executive director search was conducted by Johnny Cooper of Cooper Coleman LLC, which was selected after a request-for-proposal process that included five firms.
