CAMP Rehoboth show connects generations using art through March 31

March 17, 2021

When multiple generations come together to share their art, it gives a powerful voice to both younger and longtime artists, and builds a sense of community.

This is the premise of CommUnity, Connecting Generations Through Art, a CAMP Rehoboth exhibit featuring artistic voices that span generations. It includes works by artists 55 and older, and the creations of student artists from area schools. The exhibition is on display at CAMP Rehoboth through Wednesday, March 31.

The past year has been challenging for students, and many young people have expressed themselves through art. The exhibition includes students’ artwork from three area high schools that are part of CAMP Rehoboth’s youth programs, along with works by area elementary school students.

Edward Alban, a senior at Sussex Central, created “Over the Past Year” in response to a year of isolation. Logan Farro, a Sussex Tech student, housed a hand, heart and flag in an old TV set in “From the Past.” Naveah Heath-Mills from Cape Henlopen High created a vibrant geometric abstract in acrylics.

Longtime artists have experienced challenges too, and have continued to create art and share their stories.

Sharon Marquart’s “The Eyes of the Heart” is about oneness, peace and love as seen through the heart. Guillermo Silveira created a digital rendering of a video conference connecting participants from different hemispheres. Olaive Jones’ “In Our United States” contains the names of just some of the Black Americans slain in the past few years. Jones navigates the intersections of color, lines, shapes, and textures as she creates energetic images that connect with humanity and the myriad textures of life itself.

CAMP Rehoboth, at 37 Baltimore Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, is focusing on themes that give light to the community’s unique history and culture; serve to further diversity, equity and inclusion; and build unity and understanding.
