Canning tomatoes in Seaford in early 1900s
July 27, 2021
Emanuel Greenabaum and brothers built a tomato and pea canning operation in Seaford in the late 1800s and sold catsup under the Sundale brand label. This picture postcard from the early 1900s shows thousands of baskets of tomatoes in peck baskets lined up in front of the cannery which at the time was reputed to be the largest in the world. From mid-summer through early fall, the cannery processed tomatoes grown by farmers all across the Delmarva Peninsula.
