Cape baseball comes back with Delmar, shuts out Kent Island

April 7, 2025

A fatigued Vikings baseball squad fell behind Delmar 3-4 in the fifth inning, but bounced back scoring six in the bottom of the sixth, and held on to defeat Delmar 10-4 April 3 at Cape’s Chris Short Field. It was Coach Ben Evick’s 250th win as a head coach.

Emmett Wheatley delivered at the dish with a triple to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, and a double knocking in two RBIs for the home team. Liam Mitchell slammed a double and a single, garnering two RBIs. Brady Kosc slammed a triple, scoring two RBIs. Jaxon Clampitt scored two on his single.

Brad Marks went 4.2 innings on the mound, striking out four Wildcats. Jack Simone came in from the bullpen and went the distance, giving up just one hit while striking out two.

“The guys seemed drained from the 11-inning marathon game Tuesday with Caesar Rodney,” said Cape head coach Ben Evick. “We put up three runs in the second and felt like we were settling in. Delmar took the lead 4-3 in the fifth, and the guys knew they had to respond. We answered by tying it up at four on a huge triple by Emmett Wheatley, then put up six to put them away. We made some mental mistakes that we are unaccustomed to, but were able to battle through it. Emmett Wheatley came through huge to give us the spark we needed.”

The Vikings powered to a19-0 win over Kent Island April 5.

“We were excited to get back on the field,” said Evick. “Jacob Smith was throwing well, and keeping their hitters off balance and behind in counts.”

Cape was ahead 1-0  going into the fourth inning when they blew it wide open, scoring 18 runs.

Jaxon gave the Vikings the spark, smashing a line-drive single to center field. Wheatley walked, then Liam Mitchell laid down a perfect bunt single to load the bases. Three walks in a row led to three runs and back to the top of the order, where Kosc hit a sac fly to drive in another run. Jase Mitchell then hit a towering home run across the pond in right field. Trey Hitchcock followed with a back-to-back bomb of his own. Later in the inning, Robbie Payton, in his first varsity at-bat, hit a three-run homer.

“We just went on a tear,” Evick said. “Hitting is contagious, and it caught on.” Jacob Smith completed the game with a no-hitter while striking out eight Kent Island batters.

Cape will travel to Dover Thursday, April 10.
