Cape basketball jumps on Lake 64-50

December 9, 2024

Cape senior Damian Robinson had a game-high 24 points to lead the Vikings to a 64-50 victory over Lake Forest Dec. 6.

“I think everyone played well and we executed as a team,” said Robinson. “No one is selfish, which contributed to the big win over a great team.”

The Spartans started off tough, grabbing a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Vikings kicked it into overdrive in the second, taking a 28-21 advantage into the halftime break. After a burst by Lake in the third, the Vikings poured in 21 points in the fourth to garner the 64-50 victory.

“I thought our team defense was pretty solid most of the night,” said Cape head coach Steve Re. “Geordan Downing and Oz [Batson] were special with their closeouts and rotations. Stephen Sivels showed real maturity tonight – you can see he has been putting in work. We started a little slow on offense, but first-game nerves played a role with that. We took care of the ball and shared it; everyone played unselfishly. Dame [Robinson] and Jameson [Tingle] had great nights scoring and rebounding the ball, especially in the second half. Braxton [Figgs] had some great moments, and teammates on the bench were into the game too. It was a total team win. This group can be special if we stay humble and hungry.”

“I think we played pretty well overall,” said Tingle. “I think we showed some flashes of some really good stuff. Now if we can put all of it together, we can be scary. The first half, we weren’t hitting shots, so we knew if we started hitting, we could build the lead, and that’s what we did.”

The Vikings will host Sussex Central Thursday, Dec. 12. Game time is 6:30 p.m.

The JV Vikings defeated the Spartans 28-26 in overtime. Nick Ryan led the JV team with 11 points. Nathan Re and Joe Ruark each had six.
