Cape boys’ basketball drops close game to St. Vincent

January 29, 2024

A talent-laden St. Vincent basketball team, one of the top Maryland private schools, traveled east to take on the Cape squad Jan. 27. The Vikings gave them a run, but the Panthers proved to be too much, as they took a 66-59 victory.

Cape was ahead 43-41 in the third quarter, but the Panthers ran off 11 straight points to take a 10-point victory.

Jameson Tingle scored 31 points in the Vikings’ loss. Emanuel Ortiz Villaman tallied 12, while Kameron Trammell hit for 10.

“I felt good in the game,” said Tingle, who is scoring 18.6 points per game this season. “I started off slow and wish I had connected with a few of my shots earlier. They are a very good team. They shoot the ball better than any team we’ve played so far. They push the tempo a lot because they usually play with a shot clock. If we can keep up with them, then we should be able to keep up with the Delaware teams.”

Ortiz Villaman, replacing starter Jack Schell who missed the game for family commitments, was a force under the basket, playing 30 minutes in the game.

“I was just really focused coming into the game,” said Ortiz Villaman. “I haven’t had the season I wanted so far for my standards, so this was a statement game for me. I just wanted to keep our momentum going and help my team as much as I can.”

“We played a very tough team out of one of the best leagues in Maryland,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “We started off too slow and had trouble scoring the ball and staying within the defensive game plan. We were able to claw our way back in, but ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. I thought we had a great showing. Jameson had a career game. He really stepped up with the absence of Jack [Schell].”

The Vikings travel to Sussex Tech Tuesday, Jan. 30.
