Cape boys’ basketball falls to Cavs on Senior Night

Vikings on the bubble for DIAA state tournament
February 22, 2023

The Cape Henlopen boys’ basketball team went toe-to-toe with powerhouse Middletown in its regular-season finale Feb. 20 in Lewes, but the Vikings could never get over the hump in a 74-61 setback.

The Vikings came out hot on their Senior Night, hitting three first-quarter three-pointers to pull within one point 18-17 late in the first quarter. Middletown took control from there, running off 18 unanswered points over the next four minutes of play. Cape never dug itself out of the hole, falling behind 41-25 at the break and trailing by more than 30 points in the third quarter.

Cape (12-8, 10-4 Henlopen North) got 19 points from senior guard Tyrone Tolson, 17 points and seven rebounds from senior point guard Drew Zimmerman and a 13-point night from senior wing Trey Leggins. The Vikings did a lot of things right, shooting a robust 47% from the floor and knocking down eight threes, but Cape could do little to contain Middletown’s deadly transition attack on the other end. The Cavs converted seemingly every miscue into instant points, flying down the floor for one uncontested layup after another. Middletown also thrived on the perimeter, as senior guards Marcus Edmond and Jaden Rogers combined for 33 points and six three-pointers.

Coach Steve Re was blunt in his post-game assessment.

“Our No. 1 thing was to keep them out of transition, and we failed to do that,” Re said. “That forced us to play from behind right away. It’s tough to do that against anyone, let alone a team that athletic. I thought we played hard and kept it pretty competitive, but we definitely have things to work on going into the [state] tournament.”

Junior guard Kameron Trammell (six points, two three-pointers), senior center Odin Potemski (three points, six boards) and senior forward Tajear Freeman (three points, six boards) rounded out the Cape scoring.

The Vikings appear to be on the bubble for a berth in the DIAA basketball tournament. Their fate will be decided at a seeding meeting Saturday, Feb. 25.
