December 15, 2023

The Cape boys’ basketball team outlasted Sussex Central 48-47 to garner its second Henlopen North victory Dec. 14. The Vikings move to 3-0 on the young season. Central is 0-1.

The Vikings dictated play early in the game, leading to a 31-20 halftime advantage. Central turned the game around in the second half with high-pressure defense and keen shooting. The Golden Knights outscored Cape 20-8 in the third quarter. Central took a 42-41 lead with 4:20 left in the fourth quarter. Then with Cape trailing 47-46, Jack Schell got open to score the eventual game-winner.

With six seconds left on the clock, the Knights drove for a lay-in to go up 49-48, but the Central coaching staff called timeout before the shot and the bucket was negated. Central couldn’t convert after the timeout, allowing Cape to sneak out with a one-point win.

Senior Kameron Trammell had a game-high 16 points to lead the Vikings.

“I think if we keep communicating and playing as a team like tonight, we’ll be OK,” said Trammell. “The timeout sort of saved us, but we played very well as a team.”

Schell scored 10 points. Freshman Jameson Tingle filled the stat sheet with 11 rebounds, nine points, two assists and a block. Senior Emanuel Ortiz Villaman tallied eight points and eight rebounds. Jayden Dukes chipped in five points, four rebounds and four assists.

“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good,” said Cape coach Steve Re. “Jack was in the right place at the right time, which is his MO. We’ve got a lot of stuff to work on, but we gutted it out for our young guys and the inexperienced guys. We can’t be more proud with a game like that. It’s kind of what we needed. It looked grim for a minute, but sometimes things change.”

Brandon Spencer led the Knights with 14 points. David Maker chipped in 12. Clarence McBride-Allen had 10.

The Vikings will host Dover Tuesday, Dec. 19, while the Knights will travel across town to Delmarva Christian Saturday, Dec. 16.
