The Cape Henlopen boys’ basketball team secured its best four-game start since 2018-19 with a 75-40 thrashing of Red Lion Christian Dec. 22 in Lewes.
Trey Leggins scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the first half for Cape (3-1, 2-1 Henlopen North). The senior wing hyped up the crowd with a two-handed breakaway dunk – the first slam of his career – a minute into the game. Senior guard Drew Zimmerman (14 points), junior guard Tyrone Tolson (13 points, four assists), and sophomore guard Jayden Dukes (11 points) joined Leggins in double figures.
The Vikings hit eight of their first 10 field goal tries to take a 20-4 lead after just six minutes of play. Leggins accounted for 10 of Cape’s points during that stretch. The lead ballooned to 42-18 by halftime and 65-23 after three quarters, at which point the running clock mercy rule went into effect.
Cape coach Steve Re saw lots to like in the blowout.
“It’s about playing the right way all the time, continuing to keep the turnovers low, continuing to play the right way and staying connected defensively,” Re said. “It’s about sharing the basketball. Early in the third quarter, the lead was already big, but we really extended it. I thought defensively, rebounding-wise and rotation-wise, we did a good job.”
Leggins said his team has jelled over its last two games, both wins.
“Our unselfishness has gotten so much better,” he said. “The first couple of games, we didn’t really have a feel for each other, but the last two games have really been good. We’ve been doing our thing all together, and I’m proud of the guys.”
The Vikings established season highs in field goal percentage (49%) and three-pointers (nine) while turning the ball over a season-low 12 times. Leggins, Zimmerman, Tolson and Dukes drained two threes apiece, while reserve guard Collin Sivels added one.
Cape enjoyed its most balanced scoring effort of the year, as 11 players scored on the night. Junior guard Kameron Trammell tallied six points, while Sivels and sophomore forward Damian Robinson chipped in three points each. Senior center Odin Potemski (two points, four assists), junior forward Jack Schell (two points, 10 rebounds), senior guard Timmy Hitchcock (two points) and senior forward Tajear Freeman (two points) all contributed to the cause.
Red Lion shot just 27% from the floor and was outmuscled 42-21 on the glass.
The Vikings return to action Monday, Dec. 26, when they kick off Slam Dunk to the Beach against the Academy at Palumbo (Pa.).
