“Ask yourself one question: Do you feel Lucky?”
Tim Lucky, a Sanford School senior, scored three goals with one assist and won 18 of 24 face-offs in the Warriors’ thrilling 11-10 home win over “unlucky” Cape Henlopen.
The Vikings had possession with under two minutes remaining in a 10-10 game, but an errant pass turned the ball over to Sanford. Lucky scored the game-winner unassisted from way out front with just 13 seconds left in the game, and it was all over except the celebration.
Cape had lost to Salesianum at Abessinio Stadium April 19 by an identical 11-10 script on a shot in the final seconds after losing possession on a face-off.
Tim Lucky Sr. is the Warriors’ head coach, and his younger son, Devon, a junior, scored two goals. Collin Campbell led the Warriors with five goals.
Goalie Cameron Taylor, just an eighth-grader, had 14 saves.
The game produced an unusual stat line for the Vikings, as trusted scorers Hank D’Ambrogi, Jaden Davis and Blake Gipko were held scoreless.
D’Ambrogi, Cape’s leading scorer in goals and assists, had six assists in the game.
The Cape scoring slack was picked up by Mikey Frederick with five goals, Jack Schell and Will Bragg with two each and Gabe Best with one.
Michael Sposato went the distance in the cage with 11 saves.
The game was tied at 6-6 after one half of action. Sanford made it 7-6, but the Vikings responded with two goals for an 8-7 advantage. The game leveled up at 8-8 after three periods of play.
Sanford took a 10-8 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but the Vikings responded on a sizzler from Best and a quick-hands goal from Frederick in front to tie the game at 10-10.
And then the Vikings discovered for the second time this season that possession is 11/10ths of the law.
Cape (10-4) will host the traveling IMG Academy, a team of Division I commits from Florida, Thursday, May 13, at Legends Stadium, then play at Sussex Academy (13-1) Friday, May 14, in the Henlopen Conference Championship game.
Sanford (11-0) has games remaining versus Tower Hill, Milford and Archmere.
Coach Tim Lucky said: “It’s a big win for our program. There were a lot of missed opportunities on offense that we didn’t capitalize on. Very pleased with our defensive efforts.”
The DIAA Boys’ Lacrosse Tournament will begin Tuesday, May 18.
