Cape boys' basketball cages the Panthers

January 20, 2025

Cape sophomore Jameson Tingle and senior Damian Robinson each recorded a double-double to lead the Vikings past Polytech 72-56 Jan. 16 at the Cape hardwood. Cape moves to 6-3, while the Panthers fall to 1-8.

Tingle put up 23 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots, while Robinson tallied 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.

“I thought we played alright and a little sloppy at times with our decision-making,” said Tingle. “We had too many fouls, but in the end, a bad win is better than a good loss, so we’ll take it, learn from it and get ready for our next opponent.”

“We did some good things tonight,” said Cape head coach Steve Re. “We had the most assists as a team yet this season with 15. We haven’t been shooting the ball particularly well as of late, so I thought we did a good job of getting into transition and attacking the basket. Our team defense wasn’t our best, but we got the job done. A good thing is that everyone got to play.”

The Vikings shot just 43% from the field and 1-for-12 from behind the three-point line.

“We had a season-high in assists at Sussex Tech and that definitely translated into the Poly game,” said junior forward Braxton Figgs. “Going in, we were focused on what we could control as a team rather than who we were playing. If we execute X, Y and Z effectively, we win, no matter who's on the court with us. We moved the rock well and passed up OK shots for great shots too. That builds trust.”

Figgs had 13 points and six rebounds.

Quardell Richards and Tremaine Batson played impressive off the bench, each grabbing four rebounds.

Starters Stephen Sivels and Geordan Downing teamed to score seven points, three rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The Cape JV team defeated the Panthers 52-21 to move to 4-4, while the freshmen downed the Polytech frosh 51-36 to even their season at 2-2.

The Vikings travel to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, Jan. 21, to face the 3-7 Riders. The Vikings defeated the Riders 63-44 Dec. 19 at Cape.
