A 16-point, nine-rebound night from senior big man Jack Schell wasn’t enough to rescue the Cape boys’ basketball team from a 57-46 loss to Caravel Dec. 26 at Hoophall East at Slam Dunk to the Beach.
In a contest that immediately followed the Cape girls’ defeat at the hands of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Md.), coach Steve Re’s chances were done in by turnovers and indecision on the offensive end. The Vikings led the Bucs by a point after one quarter, but they were outscored 20-8 in the second and could never climb all the way back.
Schell poured in 12 of his points after halftime and spearheaded a 9-0 third-quarter run that cut Cape’s deficit to 28-27 midway through the frame. Caravel responded with a 15-3 spurt of its own and was never seriously threatened thereafter.
The Vikings committed 20 turnovers and shot just 33% from the floor. Cape has coughed up the ball an average of 21 times per night over its last three games, a figure that concerns Re.
“We definitely have to value the ball better and play with better consistency,” Re said. “We struggle with consistent play, and it seems to be a decision-making issue more than anything. The ball just doesn’t move fast enough due to our decision-making. If they do attack, it’s like a half-second late. They’re waiting a half-second too long to shoot it. Everything is just late. It’s something we’ve really gotta work on.”
Senior guard Kameron Trammell added nine points and three steals for Cape, while freshman guard Geordan Downing contributed seven points and a pair of highlight-reel finishes at the rim.
Senior forward Zane Bohn led the Bucs with 16 points and 10 boards.
Re did see a silver lining in the setback.
“We played harder tonight than we have,” Re said. “I can coach that, and we can continue to grow from that.”
